Lice Terms!
Confused about the difference between a nit and an egg? Wondering what products we use at the clinic? Well, here’s a comprehensive list of lice terms!
- Louse (pl. lice) – the little bug that’s running havoc in your hair (fun fact: only about 50% of people with head lice will ever itch!)
- Nit – another word for a louse egg (fun fact: nits are literally stuck to the hair strand with a glue made by a momma louse)
- Nymph – a baby louse that is not yet old enough to lay its own eggs
- Headwinds – our own in-house head lice treatment that uses technology to dehydrate nits on the head
- Comb-out – the process of separating and combing through the hair with a special comb to remove any nits
- Nit comb – a specialized comb used to remove nits from the hair (our Terminator-brand combs are the most effective type out there!)
- Dimethicone – (aka “Treatment Goop”) a clear silicone polymer that kills any hatched lice in 10 minutes and is a part of both our in-house and at-home lice treatments.
- Slippery Nit Saline Spray – a lemongrass-scented spray that we use to help with comb-outs
- Comb-out Mousse – a foamy mousse that makes nit-removal less painful in cases where someone has a lot of nits or a tender scalp
- Clarifying shampoo – a shampoo that targets product buildup and is super helpful in removing Treatment Goop from the hair
- “Freshly Minted” Preventative products – our own line of mint products that aim to prevent you from catching lice in the future (our most popular preventative product is the Peppermint Spritz!)
We hope these lice terms help you when you come into the clinic! Once here, our clinicians can answer any questions you might have during your head check or treatment. They are highly trained in all things lice, and can help you learn the difference between a myth and fact!
